Cider
Of The Festival 2008 Presentation
Tuesday
3rd March saw a short presentation take place
during our Branch Meeting at the Rose & crown in Rochford.
Christine Storer, aka Cider Woman, presented a framed certificate to
Trevor Buffett for winning Cider of the Festival in November 2008 with
Buffoon's Ribcracker. Congratulating him, she also mentioned that his
excellent cider had come second in the East Anglian regional cider
contest that had been judged in Norwich last year. After
finishing runner-up for the previous two years, the Square &
Compass in Worth Matravers,
Dorset
finally wins the right to call
itself CAMRA's National Cider Pub of the Year. One of only nine pubs in
the UK to have appeared in all 36 editions of the CAMRA Good Beer
Guide, it is full of character, boasting a rich family history with
many features of its 250 year existence remaining intact. An unique
feature is the museum housing fossils and artifacts from the village's
past.

Phil
Kempton, CAMRA's Director for Cider said, "I would like to congratulate
all of the producers that won awards at CAMRA's National Cider
& Perry Championships. Britain is currently producing a superb
variety of real ciders and perrys and I would urge anyone who has
perhaps tried a mass-produced fizzy cider or perry in the past to try a
drop of the real stuff. You will not find anything better and will not
be disappointed!"
Annual
Price Survey 2008
CAMRA's
latest survey of pub prices across Britain has been released. It shows
that the average price of real cider has increased by 7% to
£2.63, but this is still better value than keg ciders at
£2.67 a pint.
Over 1,000 pubs were surveyed in CAMRA's annual survey of pub process
that was conducted between 24th January and 24th
February.
The
apple is "The most important fruit in the world. It inspired Isaac
Newton's laws of gravity; it keeps the doctor away if consumed on a
daily basis; it tastes so lovely, not even Adam and Eve could resist
its charms; and, most exciting of all, it's the (ahem) core ingredient
of cider!"
What
is Real Cider & Perry?
Real
cider and real perry are long-established traditional drinks produced
naturally from apples and pears. Neither are carbonated nor pasteurised.
Apples used are cider apples, which are grown specifically for making cider, although in the Eastern counties - Kent up to Norfolk (including Sussex) - it is traditional to use a mixture of eating and cooking apples. Some Norfolk producers are growing cider apples as well.
Cider
apples are smaller, harder and lack the unblemished attractiveness of
eaters and cookers. They are generically identified as "Bittersweets",
"Sweets", "Sharps" and "Bittersharps", all having different
characteristics. This is why most ciders are made from a variety of
apples.
Pears
used are perry pears, which tend to be smaller and harder then
dessert pears. They are grown specifically for perry production.
In
recent years, a number of producers have started making cider and
perry from single varieties of fruit; these produce an interesting and
sometimes surprising result from a tasting point of view. Whilst cider
comes in dry, medium sweet and sweet styles, perry is normally medium
sweet or sweet.
Production
generally begins in September and continues through to early
in the New Year, and, depending on ambient temperatures, fermentation
can take until the following spring.

The
Big Apple Wins The Pomona Award 2007
The
Big Apple Association has won CAMRA's Pomona Award 2007 for its work
promoting apples and orchards.
Gillian Williams, CAMRA's Chair of Cider and Perry Campaigning, said,
"The Pomona Award is only given to those who have shown an unwavering
dedication to promoting delicious real cider and perry. Despite the
fact that The Big Apple Association is a small community organisation,
run entirely by volunteers and with very limited outside funding, they
have enjoyed tremendous success in promoting cider making in their area
and are worthy winners of the Pomona Award."
Secretary of the Big Apple Association, Jackie Denman, added, "Each one of us involved with the committee of the Big Apple Association in our corner of Herefordshire is absolutely thrilled to hear that CAMRA has picked us out to receive their coveted Pomona award. We're all involved with this community organization because we enjoy doing what we do. But the real reward for our efforts is in sharing the enthusiasm of cider and perry makers and watching them go from strength to strength.
There
is great satisfaction for us in seeing visitors trying and enjoying an
increasing range of their high quality products. It is great to see
that traditional orchards are being retained because they have a real
working purpose as well as a special place in the landscape. Our work
locally since 1989 parallels what CAMRA's Cider and Perry Committee has
been working for nationally. So we're especially proud that they have
recognized us - thank you CAMRA."
The
Big Apple Association was set up in 1989 to promote small scale
family farming dominant in Herefordshire. The group networks with local
farmers and cider producers to produce a programme of annual events
celebrating all aspects of apples and orchards.
